Traditional Farming in Transition

In the rural areas of Tanzania, where the horizon stretches wide under a vast African sky, a farmer named Kassim walks in his small plot of land, just bordering the town of Mbeya. This has been his family’s heritage for generations. Like many in his community, Kassim relied on maize farming as the cornerstone of his livelihood. However, recent years had brought unpredictable weather patterns and harsher conditions due to climate change, challenging his traditional methods of agriculture.

Determined to adapt and thrive despite these challenges, Kassim embarked on a journey into climate-smart farming. Armed with knowledge from contacting Agrimwendo, he was able to obtain extension services and support from a community of experts.

The transformation started with soil conservation. Kassim adopted practices like mulching to prevent erosion and retain moisture in the soil. He carefully constructed terraces along the slopes of his land, creating a natural barrier that slowed down runoff during heavy rains, preserving both water and nutrients.

Switching from conventional to drought-resistant maize varieties was another crucial step. With guidance from agrimwendo experts, Kassim selected seeds from verified agrodealers that have worked with Agrimwendo. The seeds were better suited to withstand erratic rainfall patterns and prolonged dry spells. These resilient varieties not only offered higher yields but also reduced his dependency on unpredictable weather conditions.

As Kassim’s farm flourished under these climate-smart practices, so did his community. His success inspired neighboring farmers to explore similar methods, fostering a spirit of collaboration and knowledge-sharing.
